We use interesting language when we talk about thoughts and beliefs, like “deep-rooted,” “entrenched” or “deeply held.” I’m sure you can think of others.

But do thoughts and beliefs actually have roots? And if they don’t, what are they — and how is it that we’re able to see them at all?
